The next time someone declares the Germans humourless, one can always counter with Heinrich von Kleist's "Der Zerbrochnem Krug", a German comedy par excellence. "The Broken Jug" mocks the failings of human nature and the judicial system in a forgiving way. While a village judge prosecuting a crime he actually committed himself certainly makes for hilarious entertainment, the play actually also negotiates a very serious matter. After all, the judge's nocturnal visit to Eva was certainly not only platonically motivated. After playing a small supporting role in the same play 17 years ago, Michael Birnbaum now takes on the role of Judge Adam in this new production by Uwe Eric Laufenberg.
