7th Symphony Concert

Giuseppe Verdi "Messa da Requiem"

Whenever Verdi is on the programme, it is usually a grand and theatrical affair! At the 2025 International May Festival, his great "Messa da Requiem" will be performed by two choirs: the State Theatre's own Opera Chorus and the Wiesbaden City Choir.

Verdi composed the final movement, "Libera me", in honour of his fellow composer Gioachino Rossini, who died in 1868. Five years later, after the death of Italian composer Alessandro Manzoni, Verdi returned to the Requiem text to create what was to become the powerful "Messa da Requiem" – a work sometimes ironically referred to as his "best opera"!

The concert will be conducted by GMD Leo McFall, known for his acclaimed interpretations of Verdi's "Otello" and "Falstaff" in Wiesbaden in 2015 and 2016.
