Opera
Macbeth
Giuseppe Verdi (1813–1901)
Opera in four acts
Sung in Italian, with German surtitles
Shakespeare's dark play centered around the power-hungry Macbeth inspired Verdi to create a new type of musical drama, one in which song and music are utilised to express the very depths of human nature and supernatural visions. "The subject of the opera is neither political nor religious: it is fantastic", writes Verdi. The composer regarded the witches as the central third figure alongside Mabeth and his lady, the latter for whom Verdi wrote one of the greatest mad scenes in operatic history.
Following his acclaimed staging of Janáček's "Katya Kabanova", South African director Matthew Wild returns to Wiesbaden to direct his second production at the Hessian State Theatre.
