Mendel Singer, a Jewish Orthodox Torah teacher, emigrates to America with his family in search of a better life, reluctantly leaving only his sick son Menuchim behind. Initially the New World brings happiness and prosperity to him and his family, but then the war breaks out and Mendel loses his wife and children – and, ultimately, his faith in God. But then a miracle takes place...
Henriette Hörnigk ("Die Küste Utopias", "Der fröhliche Weinberg") returns to Wiesbaden to direct Mendel's tale of woe, based on the Old Testament's Book of Job. Joseph Roth's literary monument to Jewish culture is underscored by Wiesbaden's Klezmer band "i giocosi", under the direction of Ako Karim.
