Turandot
Giacomo Puccini (1858 – 1924)
Opera in three acts
Sung in Italian, with German surtitles.
Libretto: Giuseppe Adami & Renato Simoni nach Carlo Gozzi
Premiere: 1926 in Milan
Determined to avenge her ancestor’s abduction, the Chinese Princess Turandot announces that if a man solves her three riddles correctly, she will marry him; but if he fails to do so, he will be put to death. The aloof princess attracts many potential suitors, all of whom lose their lives for failing to sole the riddles. But who is behind the ice-cold facade? An unknown prince solves the three riddles and comes dangerously close to Turandot.
Giacomo Puccin's last opera remained unfinished. Time and again, musicologists and composers have tried to reconstruct the ending; but it is precisely in its open-endedness that the opera's fascination lies to this day.
