»Standing ovations, cries for more and a swinging party mood in the Small House.«
Wiesbadener Kurier

»Come and meet those dancing feet,
On the avenue I'm taking you to,
Forty-Second Street.
Hear the beat of dancing feet,
It's the song I love the melody of,
Forty-Second Street.“

Young Peggy Sawyer follows this call to the place where theatre dreams come true. From her rural home she travels to New York in order to take part in the audition for Julian Marsh’s new show. Luckily, she actually becomes a member of the ensemble and there – besides the hard work that is part of large Broadway productions – encounters personal animosities amongst the participants. When star of the show, Dorothy Brock, is injured during rehearsal, the show seems on the brink of cancellation. Peggy is blamed for the accident and fired by stage manager, Julian Marsh. But the ensemble manages to convince the stage manager of Peggy’s talent.

Following its 1980 premiere in New York, »42nd Street« played on Broadway for over eight years, twice moving to larger theatres to accommodate the massive audiences that rushed to attend. In 1981 the production was nominated for several Tony Awards and won in the category of »Best Musical«.

In 2003 the celebrated »Song & Dance Extravaganza« had its German premiere in the city of Stuttgart, where the musical enticed audiences for over a year.

The version of the musical that premiered in 1981 is influenced by dance revues of the 1930s and '40s for which tap dancing is a core element. In »42nd Street« the jauntiness, energy and high spirits of tap dancing compose a pulsating and uplifting rhythm that, combined with songs such as »Go Into Your Dance«, »We're In The Money« or »Sunny Side To Every Situation«, will guarantee a show full of optimism and zest.
