Simon Bailey

Simon Bailey was born in England and has lived in Frankfurt since 2002. With a large repertoire consisting of operatic roles and oratorio works, he has proven to be one of the most versatile bass-baritones of his generation.

Career highlights include Figaro (NOZZE DI FIGARO) at La Scala, Leporello (DON GIOVANNI) at the Royal Opera House Covent Garden, Balstrode (PETER GRIMES) at English National Opera, Achilla (GIULIO CESARE) in Vienna, Jochanaan (SALOME) in Stuttgart, Four Villains (HOFFMANN) in Basel and Mizoguchi (KINKAKUJI) in Strasbourg. Recent guest engagements include Wotan in Wagner's DAS RHEINGOLD under Kent Nagano and Balstrode in PETER GRIMES at the English National Opera London, the title role of DON PASQUALE at the Saarländisches Staatstheater in Saarbrücken, David Strom in the world premiere of Kris Defoort's THE TIME OF OUR SINGING at the Théâtre Royal de la Monnaie in Brussels, Totenrichter in Dessau's DIE VERURTEILUNG DES LUKULLUS at the Staatsoper Stuttgart, Achilla at the Theater an der Wien, Klingsor at the Opéra National du Rhin in Strasbourg, Kutuzov in WAR AND PEACE at the Welsh National Opera and the Royal Opera House Covent Garden in London, as well as Leporello at the Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden and most recently at the Welsh National Opera.

A former ensemble member of Oper Frankfurt and winner of the 2018 Wales Theatre Award, Simon Bailey continues to appear regularly as a guest in Frankfurt; most recently as Fra Melitone in LA FORZA DEL DESTINO, Peter in HÄNSEL UND GRETEL, and as Mr Redburn in BILLY BUDD.

Future opera appearances include the entire RING as Wotan and Wanderer at the Tiroler Festspiele in Erl and his debut as Hans Sachs in DIE MEISTERSINGER VON NÜRNBERG in England. Simon Bailey is also in demand internationally as a concert singer. Recent concert appearances include MESSIAH at the Royal Albert Hall in London, the Alte Oper Frankfurt and the Musikverein in Vienna, Gurnemanz (PARSIFAL) in Bochum and ELIJAH in Giessen and Wetzlar.
