Oryx and Crake
Søren Nils Eichberg (*1973)
Performed in English, with German surtitles.
Libretto: Hannah Dübgen, based on the 2003 novel by Margaret Atwood
A new work commission by Hessisches Staatstheater Wiesbaden
Based on the novel by the great Canadian author Atwood, the newly commission opera "Oryx and Crake" takes us into a fascinating dystopian future where genetic engineering rules the world. A new breed of humans – passive, docile Children of Crake who are physically flawless, void of envy and jealousy, do not understand violence or sexual drive, unable to be artistic or comprehend technology – are to replace humanity here. Both the opera and the novel pose the question of how far science and genetic engineering may go in order to optimise human beings. Is it admissible to biotechnologically alter the emotional structure of Homo sapiens in order to achieve a permanently peaceful society?
After the success of his world premiere "Schönerland" (2017/18), composer Søren Nils Eichberg once again harnesses the power of contemporary opera, alongside a gripping new libretto by Hannah Dübgen. Daniela Kerck, known for her acclaimed staging of Jörg Widmann's "Babylon" in 2021/22, returns as director and designer, supported by video artist Astrid Steiner. Albert Horne conducts the Hessian State Orchestra.
